History and Special Features

The University of Ballarat offers a unique opportunity to experience the 'real Australia' while you study here.

Ballarat is big enough to offer the delights of a big city, but life in Ballarat is less hurried, is safer, less polluted, and yet close enough to offer access to many other attractions, such as the surf beaches along the Great Ocean Road, the Grampians National Park, the snow fields of Mt Buller, and the cosmopolitan city of Melbourne.

We provide excellent staff-student ratios, a wide range of first class sporting facilities as well as on-campus accommodation, easy access to computing and library facilities, all in a natural bushland setting where kangaroos and koalas often wander.

Location

With strong ties to its historic past, modern Ballarat is a lively provincial city of almost a hundred thousand people located in the Victorian Highlands just over an hour's drive west from Melbourne, Australia's second largest city. To the south, just an hour away, are beautiful ocean beaches, including the famous surfing mecca, Bell's Beach. From this point the Great Ocean Road traverses 800km (500 miles) of spectacular coastline, with many famous and beautiful natural landmarks, picturesque coastal towns and villages, lush temperate rainforests, lakes and national parks. To the west are the Grampian Mountains, complete with spectacular, rugged mountain valleys, waterfalls, aboriginal sites and unique flora and fauna.

Student Numbers and Staff

The University of Ballarat has an on campus student population of just over 5,000 students, with over 10% of these students being international students. Considered a medium sized university, our class sizes are considerably smaller than larger institutions, which in turn results in a more personally orientated education for all students.
