History and Special Features

Central Queensland University was established as the Queensland Institute of Technology (Capricornia) in 1967, and became the Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education in 1971 before a transition phase as the University College of Central Queensland in 1990.

We achieved University status in January 1992 as the University of Central Queensland, subsequently changing our name to Central Queensland University in order to stress our unique partnership with our region.

Special Features:

  • CQU offers smaller lecture and tutorial classes so that students have close contact with their lecturers and tutors;
  • CQU courses have a practical "hands on" orientation;

Location

Within Australia, international students now have the choice of studying with CQU at five varied locations. In Queensland, CQU Rockhampton, situated on the Tropic of Capricorn, offers easy access to the Great Barrier Reef and the Australian Outback, and annually hosts one of Australia's largest single-day multicultural celebrations with crowds of more than 20,000 people attending the University campus to share in the experience of many different cultures.

The Brisbane and the Gold Coast campuses offer quality courses and access to major city and tourism facilities. The Sydney and Melbourne campuses offer modern facilities and are located in vibrant cities, close to transportation and shops.

English Language Courses

CQU has a Language Centre on both Rockhampton and Gold Coast Campuses.

Students at the CQU Language Centres have access to:

  • 24 hour computer laboratories;
  • Modern air-conditioned classrooms;
  • Language Laboratory;
  • Student Officer;
  • University Student Card; and
  • Free ESL support service for students enrolled in formal courses.

As well as General English, Academic English Programs and English for Academic Purposes plus one University subject (EAP +1) EAP+1 provides the academic and study skills needed to successfully undertake University degree programs. Students have the option of enrolling in one course from a CQU degree program, which if successfully completed, can be credited towards the formal degree.

Introductory Academic Program (IAP) - a 5 week program designed for students who have been accepted into a formal program at CQU.

Direct Entry English for Academic Purposes. Students who meet all course requirements of this 10 week program are able to gain direct entry to Central Queensland University without the need to sit for a further English proficiency test. For entry into this program, an IELTS score of 5.5 (or equivalent) plus a conditional offer of a place in a CQU undergraduate or postgraduate program, is required. Admission offered three times a year, immediately prior to university intakes.

The CQU Language Centre (Rockhampton) is also an IELTS Testing Centre and is fully accredited by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS). The Language Centre, located on CQU's tropical Rockhampton campus, provides excellent English Language Tuition in a caring and friendly environment.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate admission:

Entry to undergraduate programs is available to applicants who have successfully completed Year 12 or its equivalent. As a guide, two GCE 'A' level of D grade or above will meet basic entry requirements.

It is important to note, however, that some programs require previous study in particular subject areas. Please note specific country undergraduate admission requirements can be available through contacting Auscon Associates (Pvt) Ltd.

Postgraduate admission:

Entry to postgraduate programs is available to applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of an Australian bachelor degree. It is important to note, however, that some programs require previous study in particular subject areas. Please note specific country postgraduate admission requirements can be available through contacting Auscon Associates (Pvt) Ltd.

Pakistani applicants for all courses are required to have an acceptable level of competence in writing, reading, speaking, and understanding English. Students wishing to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate business coursework programs are required to have the equivalent of an overall IELTS band score of 6 (with no individual band score of less than 5), or a TOEFL score of 550, including a TWE score of 4 (computer based score of 213).

Other postgraduate research programs require a minimum TOEFL score of 600, including a TWE score of 5 (computer based score of 250), or an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (with no individual band score less than 6.0).

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for CQU Undergraduate programs range from:

  • A$1,680 to A$1,950 per course for on campus study; and
  • A$1,500 to A$1,950 per course for external study.

Tuition fees for CQU Postgraduate coursework programs range from:

  • A$2,190 per course for on campus study; and
  • A$2,000 per course for external study.

Tuition fees for CQU Research, PhD programs range from:

  • A$2,000 to A$3,000 per course for on campus research; and
  • A$2,000 to A$3,000 per course for external research.

Accommodation Costs

Accommodation costs vary according to the type of accommodation required and the city the student is living.

An approximate guide for meals and accomodation in the cities which CQU has campuses include: Prices are in Australian dollars (unless otherwise specified) and are calculated for a period of one year.

  • Rockhampton - A$8,300;
  • Gold Coast - A$9,800;
  • Brisbane - A$10,000;
  • Sydney - A$12,000;
  • Melbourne - A$11,000; or
  • New Zealand - NZ$6,800.

Scholarships and Grants

MBA Scholarship

The MBA Scholarship is available to students who wish to study at Rockhampton Campus. Approved candidates receive a 33 percent reduction to tuition fees for the duration of the program. Students articulating from the Graduate Certificate to the Graduate Diploma in Management through to the MBA, will also receive the same reduction in course fees.

Vice Chancellors Scholarship

Central Queensland University offers a limited number Vice Chancellor Scholarships to top new international students.

Scholarships are available to newly commencing students for study at the University's Rockhampton and Gold Coast International campuses. Each scholarship provides exceptional students with a 20 percent reduction in tuition fees for the duration of their degree.

This exceptional program supports and expands our commitment to our students and increases the number of qualified international students, both undergraduate and postgraduate.

Students can choose degrees from any faculty for this scholarship and are assessed by a panel on a case by case basis.

International Postgraduate Research Award (IPRA)

The International Postgraduate Research Award provides the successful candidate with a tuition free place and a living allowance to the value of A$19,616 (2007 rate) per annum, research support grant and thesis submission funds for a two year Master or three year Doctoral program. This scholarship is only available to research candidates wishing to study at the Rockhampton Campus.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarship covers the successful candidate’s tuition fees, Overseas Student Health Cover and living allowance to the value of A$19,616 (2007 rate) per annum for a two year Master or three year Doctoral program. Kumar Parakala
Master of IT
CQU Rockhampton Campus

CQU Rockhampton business/IT graduate Kumar Parakala has gained a position as Chief Operating Officer for KPMG's International Practice in Information Risk Management.

The Sydney-based executive is happy to praise CQU for its committed staff, "who are keen on providing an exceptional student experience for every student".

Kumar Parakala is also the NSW Chairman for the Australian Computer Society, responsible for driving strategic initiative for ICT professionals, working collaboratively with government agencies, industry bodies, educational institutions and the private sector. In his role as Chairman, Kumar is credited with successfully restructuring the ACS NSW to improve services to members and enhance the Society's profile within the ICT community.

He is a recognised industry leader in the areas of Governance, IT Project Management, Risk Management and Sercurity, and has been a guest speaker at various conferences and summits focused on these issues. He has successfully implemented ICT governance frameworks at large Australian and international organisations.
