University of New England

Introduction

From its beginning as a campus of The University of Sydney in 1938 to becoming a fully independent campus in 1954, UNE has enjoyed a rich heritage, a reputation for academic distinction and for offering an enviable lifestyle.

The campus of UNE has many historical traditions, which are epitomised by the stately building ‘Booloominbah’. This grand homestead, in the centre of the campus and surrounded by lush green lawns and majestic oak trees, is the perfect place to relax for lunch or catch up on some study. Twice a year on the lawns of Booloominbah, faculties hold their graduation ceremonies, for which students from around the world come to Armidale to be part of the UNE graduation experience and to be recognised for their academic achievements. Steeped in tradition, Booloominbah is the perfect backdrop for your academic career at UNE.

UNE offers a broad range of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels on the main campus in Armidale, NSW. In addition to the main Armidale campus, UNE also offers degrees through the National Marine Science Centre at Coffs Harbour, NSW. The Armidale campus is rich in history and tradition, as well as being a central point for research and innovation. UNE also began offering distance education courses in 1955 and is Australia’s most experienced institution in distance education. UNE has an outstanding reputation for its commitment to distance education, and for setting standards for academic learning across the world.

Academic excellence, world class graduates, a supportive and accessible network of teaching staff, and an innovative environment are the strengths on which The University of New England’s reputation is founded. UNE is proud of its heritage and status as one of Australia’s oldest universities.

Location

One of the greatest benefits of studying at UNE is the relaxed lifestyle of the campus and Armidale in general. This friendly, vibrant community is complemented by a surrounding landscape of rolling hills and masses of eucalyptus trees that lead to dramatic gorges and waterfalls within easy distance of the city itself. Armidale is ideally placed, roughly halfway between the metropolitan capitals of Sydney and Brisbane. With an easygoing and unpolluted lifestyle, it is the ideal place for students to live while studying.

Student Numbers and Staff

The University of New England was the first Australian university established outside a capital city. With a history extending back to the 1920s, UNE has a well-earned reputation as one of Australia's great teaching, training and research universities.

Its graduates consistently rate their experience at UNE highly, a reflection of the University's commitment to student support. More than 75,000 people now hold UNE qualifications, with many in senior positions in Australia and overseas. UNE has built up its academic profile to the point where it now has more than 500 PhD candidates, an important sign of the University's academic vigour and rigour.
