History and Special Features

Box Hill Institute of TAFE was established in 1924 and today is one of the largest "Polytechnic style" institutes in Australia. As a Government institution, Box Hill Institute offers one of the widest ranges of courses in Australia. All four campuses are conveniently located within 10 minutes walking distance from each other and from the Box Hill Central public transport centre.

Location

Box Hill Institute is located in Box Hill, approximately 18 km east of the central district of Melbourne. It is pleasant place in which to live and study. Box Hill is well served by shopping centres, health services, religious centres, restaurants, sporting arenas and parks. It is a suburban public transport centre, only 25 minutes by train from central Melbourne. The Institute has four main campuses in the Box Hill region.

Over 37,000 students enrol every year at Box Hill Institute in total. Over 1000 of these are international students.

Faculties / Fields of Study

Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma courses in the following fields:

Business: Accounting, Human Resources, International Trade, Marketing, Office Administration, Public Relations and Sports Administration; Computing & Information Technology: Computer Programming, Computer Systems, Engineering and Computer Service Technician; Engineering & Building: Civil Engineering, Mechanical & Manufacturing, Architectural Drafting, Electronic Engineering, Building Construction and Automotive Studies; Hotel and Restaurant Management: Commercial Catering; Travel and Tourism Arts: Graphic Art, Design, Visual Arts, Floristry and Multi Media; Music; and Sciences, Nursing and Hairdressing.

We also have Associate and Bachelor Degree in the following fields; Fashion Technology, Commerce, Computer Systems Networking, Biotechnology and Music.

New To Box Hill in 2006 are the following courses:

• Certificate IV in Health (Nursing);
• Diploma of Hairdressing; and
• Associate Degree in Commerce.

English Language Courses

• English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS). Flexible courses from 5 to 40 weeks;
• English for Business Studies: 10 week program; or
• English for Information Technology Studies: 10 week program.

Admission Requirements

Completion of secondary education to Year 12 or equivalent. Some Certificate courses may be entered after completion of Year 11 or equivalent.

Mature Age Entry - Students with incomplete secondary education and approved relevant experience, who are at least 18 years of age and have been out of full time study for at least one year.

Some courses may have additional entry requirements, eg. presentation of a portfolio of designs for Fashion, Design and Art courses.

• English Language Admission Requirements;
• IELTS:- 5.5 average; and English language requirements for Bachelor courses require;
• IELTS - 6.0 Academic; and
• TOEFL score - 550 for the paper examination and 213 for the computer examination.

Important Dates / Academic Year

Academic year is from February to December divided into two semesters and terms:

• Semester 1:- February to June; and
• Semester 2:- July to December.

All formal courses commence in February and many courses also commence in July.
ELICOS courses start nine times throughout the year including 4 week summer school program.

Foundation Studies

For students keen to start artistic courses but cannot submit a folio for assessment Foundation courses in Art is available.

Support Services and Facilities

The Institute provides a range of services to support international students, including:

• course information;
• free airport pick-up service;
• free homestay placement;
• study support;
• general welfare support and counselling; and
• "Friendship Program" includes regular excursions and activities.

Tuition Fees

• All formal courses A$9,000 per year;
• Diploma of Hospitality Management (Commercial Cookery) A$11,000;
• Diploma of Hospitaity Management (Patisserie/Baking) A$11,000;
• Bachelor of Applied Music Degrees A$12,500;
• Bachelor of Biotechnology Degree A$12,500;
• Bachelor of Computer Systems (Networking) A$12,500; or
• ELICOS courses A$270 per week.

Accommodation Costs

• Homestay (full board) approximately A$185 per week;
• Homestay (part board) approximately A$100per week;
• Share House approximately A$100per week; or
• Hostel (off campus) ranges between A$150 may be cheaper for long term.

In recent years, international students from Box Hill Institute of TAFE have been among the winners of awards for excellence in their field of study. Awards have been won by students from Hong Kong, India, Great Britain, Papua New Guinea, Japan, Mauritius, Thailand and China. Fields of study include Hospitality, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Furniture Design, Fashion Studies, Travel and Tourism.
